Annual shipments of semiconductors, including integrated circuits and optoelectronics, sensors and discrete semiconductors (OSD), are expected to grow 7 percent by 2020, according to a new IC insights report
IC insights expects total semiconductor shipments to grow 7% to 1,036.3 billion in 2020, only the second time they have exceeded a trillion units. The all-time high was 1,046 billion in 2018.In 2020, photoelectric devices, sensors and separators are expected to account for 69 percent of semiconductor shipments and integrated circuits for 31 percent.
As can be seen from the chart below, the semiconductor industry fluctuates periodically. In 2007, semiconductor shipments exceeded the level of 600 billion units. Later, due to the global financial crisis, semiconductor shipments dropped sharply in 2008 and 2009.By 2010, unit shipments had rebounded sharply, growing by as much as 25 percent, and by 2018 they had passed the 1 trillion mark.
For the 42 years from 1978 to 2020, the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of semiconductor units is projected to be 8.6%.
IC insights said it expects the gap between IC and o-s-d devices in total shipments to be greater than 2:1 by 2020, with the majority of o-s-d devices.O-s-d devices are expected to account for 69% of total semiconductor shipments, compared with 31%, a share that has remained constant for years.
In addition, IC insights predicts that the semiconductor segment scenarios with the highest growth per unit by 2020 include smartphones, automotive electronics and artificial intelligence, cloud and "big data" systems, and deep learning applications.
